This is interesting, not only since the book seems to have progressed from 1975 - 1997 but also that the other author credits seem to have been removed. My earlier versions are 12 pages of rules with the sections:
Outline of Method of Play (page 1)
Detail of Movement (1)
How to Move (1)
Combat (2)
Wounding (3)
Missile Attacks (3)
Nets and Capes (4)
Special Damage (5)
Throwing Sand (5)
Throwing Shields (5)
Mounted Gladiators (5)
Animals (6)
Advancement (6)
Special Hexes (6)
Facing (7)
Essendarii (8)
Postulati (8)
Captives (8)
Campaign Game (9)
Allotment of Characters (9)
Advancement (9)
Matches (10)
Wounds (11)
Schools (12)
Posting Bond (12)
Veteran Animals (12)
With the difference in page count, it sounds like more has been added. Have they just been tacked onto the end or does it seem like the rest of the book has been reformatted as well?

From the correspondence from tfm:

... looking at it, I'd say these were the original rules with three extra pages in a different font added in. Page 1 begins "ARENA is a game based on the Roman . . . "
The sections are as follows:
Outline of Method of Play
Detail of Movement
How to Move
Combat
Wounding
Missle Attacks
Nets and Capes
Special Damage
Throwing Sand
Throwing Shields
Mounted Gladiators
Animals
Advancement
Special Hexes
Facing
Essendarii
Postulati
Captives
Campaign Game--
Allotment of Characters
Advancement
Matches
Wounds (end of old typeface)
new typeface
Schools
Posting Bond
Veteran Animals
Hit Location Marker Chart
Same page again
There are also the 4 sheets.
This seems to match the same original quite well but perhaps the sections have been expanded. There is also the addition of Hit Location Marker Chart. The 4 additional sheets I have are a hex sheet and 3 sheets with tables denoted 1 through 7.

Do you think we should put these under one thread or keep them separate? If it's really advanced then it needs to stay separate. If it's a glorified version of the older rules, then it should get moved.
Another possibility is that we might have to create a new category for Adversary Products. Carl Smith or someone else might be re-releasing the old titles with slightly changed information.
In any case we should compare them a bit closer. I'll get a more detailed description up later today. _________________ "This is cool."

While you guys are at it. Can either of you confirm this is the Carl Smith of TSR employment?
That is a good question. I am pretty sure that the Adversary Games Carl Smith also wrote a number of books for Osprey but not sure about the D&D books.

Having now obtained a copy of Arena Advance Rules, I have compared them with my other copies of Arena. The text in both is the same. The only difference appears to be that the Advanced Rules contain the Hit Location Marker Chart.
